Could the desert sun power the world?

In just six hours, the world's deserts receive more from the sun than humans consume in a year, calculated German physicist Gerhard Knies in 1986. If even a tiny fraction of this energy could be harnessed, Knies believed we could move beyond dirty and dangerous fuels for ever. “Desertec” is the culmination of his efforts.
