WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Trump administration’s Department of Transportation Administrator Sean Duffy published a final rule that paves the way for the administration to roll back the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards, commonly known as fuel economy standards.

The rule – promulgated without notice or opportunity for public comment – offers an unprecedented interpretation of the Energy Policy and Conservation Act intended to constrain the agency’s ability to establish more protective fuel economy standards.

Transportation is the second largest household expenditure behind housing for American families, accounting for 15 percent of average household spending.

In response to the announcement, Sierra Club Clean Transportation for All Director Katherine García released the following statement:

“The Trump administration’s deregulatory, pro-polluter transportation agenda will only increase costs for Americans. Making our vehicles less fuel efficient hurts families by forcing them to pay more at the pump. This action puts the well-being of our communities at risk in every way imaginable. It will lead to fewer clean vehicle options for consumers, squeeze our wallets, endanger our health, and increase climate pollution. The Sierra Club will continue to push back against this administration’s dangerous clean transportation rollbacks.”
